The BEST and WORST Vintage Olympus 28mm Lens, f/2, 2.8, 3.5 Showdown | Round Glass Review
Olympus Zuiko OM 28mm lenses were highly regarded in their time. This vide compares the three film-era Zuiko 28mm lenses -- the Olympus Zuiko 28mm f/2, Olympus Zuiko 28mm f/2.8, and Olympus Zuiko 28mm f/3.5. These lenses carry vastly different prices, so is the price premium on the f/2 worth it? Is the f/3.5 really the worst?

I was able to get a Pentax 17 today and, honestly, didn't even know it would be released until by happenstance I walked into a camera store when they were talking about it. My initial thought is that it looks great but I have some serious reservations about the battery door engineering and the overall build. The camera looks gre...

The TT Artisan 100mm f/2.8 Bubble Bokeh lens, out of the box, is largely a one-trick pony. What it does is create a specific type of background look with soft-ish portraits that don’t actually meet the aesthetic of soft-focus lenses. It can also be used to create that specific background look with other subjects, but portraits are where this lens is really intended to be used. But here’s the th...

The Minolta Autofocus 28mm f/2.8 Alpha Mount lens is one of the poster children for why a 28mm f/2.8 is a solid cornerstone for a camera kit from the first time someone buys a camera through, well, as good as they can get with their gear. A good, and this one is that, by the way, a good 28mm f/2.8 lens will perform reliably and deliver images that a photographer can be happy that they took. The...

Canon EOS Rebel T2i Tutorial 2 Complete Operational Explanation
Great explanation! Just got it and I cannot wait to shoot and develop
Very enlightening, numerous explanations on features that the original Owners Manual never explains (might be the worst written document I've ever read, all marketing BS with scant useful details - I hope the Zeiss engineers were much better than their Support and Marketing people!). Particularly helpful that the manual didn't address is what direction to turn the locking keys on the bottom to open the film compartment. I also appreciated a proper and better expiation of the timer switch, but maybe this should include a word of caution - I've been warned by others to avoid using a delayed timer on older cameras. It's said this is often a weak point in their design and the part most prone to failure, which could lock up the works, thus requiring a difficult and expensive fix. And as David alluded to, it's almost impossible to find anyone to work on these complicated cameras, not to mention the cost, so I'm not gonna tempt curiosity or fate here. Thanks so much David!
I have been shooting my first rolls of this in 120 on three classic cameras. A Yashica 124 G, Ansco Viking 4.5 (6x9cm) and Ansco Speedex Special R (6x6). I'm going to try developing this film myself so fingers crossed that I get some nice images!
Thank you David I have been buying new cameras every time my camera died. God bless
Cara stel efek kamera 1100 d
When you take the light reading /stop down metering in what position should the A/M switch on the lens be? Thanks
A. The aperture will close Automatically when the photo is taken. Good question.
4:00 The F1 amongst your top 2 or 3 cameras ever made? Which are the others? ❤
In no specific order, Minolta Alpha 9, Pentax LX, Nikon F3, and Plumps OM-4 for 35mm. The Bronica S2A is a favorite, too.
You convinced me to fix the light seals in my Spotmatic all Pentax DSLR cameras are ASP-C I dont need anything cropped more like half frame at least the Spotmatic is full frame with interchangeable lenses
Makes sense
perhaps showing actual large prints might be more convincing - thanks for the video anyway
How would I go about showing large prints to an audience that's something like 60% mobile phone viewers and 37% desktop? I don't know if a technical solution to that which makes large images work. However, for those interested, there's also a link in the video description to the full-res images used in this video.
Excellent teaching video. Great details. RS. Canada
Thank you, Richard!
I traded my f2.8 for the f2. The 2.8 just felt like it had less character and I liked the idea of an extra stop of light. Even more than that I think the character of the f2 is more pleasing to me. You really can’t go wrong with any of the Olympus lenses from this era though! Thanks for another great video!
Thank you! It's definitely fair to say that the 2.8 has less character. 😃
I have a lens that gives me a soft haze in the middle whenever I shoot with the sky in the back, is there a name for it?, and its only the sky.
That's either flare, a hot spot, or a ghost, and it's not possible to say which without seeing it. They all have different causes and preventions. A diffuse bright spot with the aperture open is likely flare. Same but with the aperture closed is probably a hot spot. If the shape is colored and has the shape of the aperture, it's a ghost.
@@DavidHancock maybe a hot spot, it just looks washed out in the middle of the photo contains the sky.
Like your photos, video is very well done as well. Would have liked to see more photos.
Thank you!
I love my FD glass, but testing them is a chore with that silly mount. Gotta bring my a1 to every thrift store😂
As an Industrial designer, this camera is ugly as hell. As a photographer this is a mistake and a flop in the making, wait until people get the first rolls from the labs, they will return this crap to Pentax fast. Pentax will not be able to compete with other camera makers like Lomography and Rollei. Rollei is already working on their brand new Rollei 35 AF...Pentax, what have you done, what a disgrace.
I wasn't a fan of the design at first and still don't like how the viewfinder fits into it. The top is growing on me and i the interface is absolutely delightful to use. I'm about halfway through my first roll and the way everything feels is nice. It's also filled with fun tricks like the strap being the same length as the minimum focus distance, which I've been making use of. The grip also feels fantastic to hold and carry. I am curious to know how the little triplet lens works and can't wait to finish this roll and send it off.
@@DavidHancock lens can be sharp, Pentax has always made outstanding glass but half-frame can never compete with full frame, there are no miracles on this matter. If you are into half-frame you can buy a gorgeous Olympus Pen F for the same price, an value wise, it's a better choice.
@@nunoteixeiradesign going with a vintage used camera over this is definitely not a great choice. The Pen cameras have shutters that, if they jam, are ruined and generally unrepairable. Also, they're old now and worn and have higher and higher failure rates now than even a few years ago. Plus the 17 is packed with features that the Pen series lacked. Comparing this to any vintage camera is unfair to both cameras because the feature sets and component ages are so different.
2024 calling!! I bought my 2nd 5D (I had a used one in 2018 but sold it ... and regretted it ever since). My latest one cost $230 and it is in "Straight out of the box" condition, I swear nobody has ever used it. They are fantastic camera and some of the greatest images ever taken were taken on this camera. Remember!! Great cameras don't stop being great.
28mm is so intresting focal length. Definitely a favourite. On the pen F the 20mm 3.5 is the 28 but stil amzing focal length for vertical photos
It's grown on me a bit. I tend to be attracted to 24mm, but the slightly lower amount of scene distortion in 28 is very nice. 28mm on half frame is pretty close to an ideal standard lens.
what a great video. Very useful to see how this works with the actual parts
Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to make an in-depth tutorial!
Thank you!
4:59, where cinestill shines.
Oh yes, cinestill, a very tempremental stock. Its nice, but only under very specific circumstances, its not for very colorful scenes.
Just started to reuse this film after a year, reminds me of cinestill but not as unpredictable.
What do you call the shutter on these cameras?, like my Nikon F4, the photos have what I call a glass look compared to regular SLRs.
This camera has a focal plane shutter.
Bro..what is a guillotine shutter?
It's one that has a single shutter blade that moves out of the way and back, often down then up in 35mm cameras.
@@DavidHancock which ones have that and whats the benefit?
@@monsieurgolem3392 it's not that there's a specific benefit. There are a bunch of different types of shutters -- guillotine, leaf, and focal plane are the most common. They're selected based on camera need, design, and cost. There are some different benefits in terms of flash sync and maximum shutter speed, also trade-offs in cost and complexity.
@@DavidHancock got it.
Next week I will receive the second camera of this design with a fixed Hotschoe. There are 26 models of this design from various manufacturers such as Ricoh, Cosina and Chinon, as well as from photo retailers such as Foto Quelle, Photo Porst, Sears etc., which have sold the export models of the three manufacturers mentioned under other names, which I was able to find after lengthy research. Of these 26 models, only two had a hotshoe, namely the Sigma Mark 1 and the Universa Interflex TL. The Sigma Mark 1 is essentially the first camera model that Sigma ever brought onto the market and was created based on the original blueprints of the Ricoh Singlex TLS, which Sigma bought directly from Ricoh. The Sigma Mark 1 came onto the market in 1976, nine years after the Ricoh Singlex TLS. The Universa Interflex TL is the modified export version of the Cosina Hi-Lite and came onto the market in 1970. In addition to the added hotshoe, modifications included a newly designed cocking and transport lever, as well as a redesigned release button, in which the screw thread was separated from the release button for the cable release and attached behind it. Here is the complete list based on my research: Ricoh Singlex TLS Sears T-L-S Sigma Mark 1 Cavalier Five Thousand RTL Cosina SLR Revueflex T Cosina Hi - Lite Proloisirs Hi - Lite Reporter Hi-Lite universa Interflex TL Carena 1000 Porst uniflex TTL Porst reflex TTL Revueflex 1000s TTL Revue Superflex TTL Ifbaflex TTL Ifbaflex T 1000 Chinonflex TTL Chinon Prinzflex TTL Prinzflex Super TTL Chinon Riaflex TTL Kingflex TTL Focal 1000 TLX Argus STL 1000 Phokina Interflex TLS Evil tongues would claim that these 26 models are roughly based on the Konica Auto-Reflex or Konica Autorex as it is called in Japan, which came onto the market in 1965, but that would be going too far. 😉
Thank you! That's great research.
@@DavidHancock You are very welcome. You can search for the Universa Interflex TL on UA-cam. There's a very ingenious video where the top half of the front of the camera takes up almost the entire thumbnail. It should also be displayed right at the top when you enter the camera name.
Hey David,on my camera(Nikon FM10), shutters 1,1/2,1/4 is not working ,how could I fix it😢.
That's a question for the Fix Old Cameras channel, but the likely answer is that it may not be fixable.
@@DavidHancock Thanks for the reply man
Have you ever developed it in D76 1:1 and if so at what time? Most reviews I have seen show that it was not exposed at box speed but at 40ASA. Thank you in advance; I shoot 120 via a Fuji GSW690 III and Minolta Spotmeter and print in a darkroom. Up until now Tri-X rated at 200 with the lightest yellow filter. Would it screw up the balance of this film?
I see you mentioned FRESH D76 at 40ASA as a close second but you did not like D76 1:1. What was your development time with the the stock D76 at 40ASA? Thanks!
Good question and the D-76 reference you found should be linked in the video description. There's an info screen that should have the info you need.
@1:10, the AoV cell for the 2.8 says "AoV" instead of a number. Was that not available online or not measurable?
Dang it. That was a typo because I make these late at night after work. The AoV on all is stated as the same.
tyvm for the video! I own the f/2 so I am obviously a fan of spherical/chromatic/pedantic abomination and I'm getting what I payed for. Or not?
Probably are. 😃 Honestly, I think that the f/2 has some serious potential for some uses, more so than the other two.
I have this exact model, but the red flag does not work in any mode. I wonder if I still could be able to use the camera in a decent way to have pictures with a good exposure. Thank you in advance. The shutter works, by the way.
The best way to check is, without film, point it at a light then at a dark part of the room and see if it responds differently.
@@DavidHancock see if It keep open duting more time in the dark?
@@jesusescudero9721 I think only the aperture changes with this camera, so you may need to open it and look through the lens to test it.
@@DavidHancock It looks like It open always in the same way ...
@@jesusescudero9721 A couple other tests, try that pointing the camera outside but also seeing the film speed to the slowest and fastest settings. If it's still the same, there may be an issue.
Well done, a very useful video fpr new owners. I picked up my copy at the Frankfurt fleamarket for 13 Euro (14$), now i am prepared, when the battery will arrive tomorrow. Thank you.
Yay, the 28mm showdown I've personaly been waiting for! I'm routing for Zuiko 28mm f/2, since it's the only one of these I have, but it's definitely not a perfect lens, so I expect f/2.8 to be a bit better.
And I can confirm that Zuiko 28mm f/2 has a floating group, and when it malfunctioned, it was reeeealy noticable.
This was an interesting one to make. I'm definitely looking forward to the next.
Hello,I have a Pentax A SMC f1:2 50mm,but the appertaure ring is very tight and the threaded ring above focusing number, just rotates and focusing is not working,is there any way to fix this
Good question. I've never used that lens. The Fix Old Cameras channel might be a better resource.
Great Videos on the T7. Can this camera be charged via the micro USB port? We forgot the battery charger and tried to charge via the micro USB port, but nothing.
Thank you and IIRC, no it cannot.
I know a lot of photographers turned their nose up at this inexpensive film stock, but I loved it, and am sad it’s gone. Very shootable, affordable, and pleasant colors, particularly the reds and greens. Was very disappointed to see Fuji replace it with rebranded Kodak stock, everything is becoming so homogenized.
Yeah, it's kind of a bummer each time they're a bit less diversity in film stocks.
I have a feeling that the focusing screen in itself is a Fresnel lens, am I right?
Some. It depends on the design. As a general rule with exceptions, the screen itself is ground glass or plastic and a separate Fresnel will be next to the screen. Most cameras after the 50s included either a Fresnel or a ground glass design that did the same thing to reduce the effects of light ray roll of and periphery darkness in viewfinders.
Wonderful poetry and great sights.
Thank you!
Tomorrow i'm shooting with that camera ;) Regards and thanks
Nice and thank you!
Besides some stuff as a kid with an old Pentax SLR, I began my film photography journey with an FM2 I picked up off eBay 4 years ago. An absolutely phenomenal camera to work with. Decently newbie friendly, while also having a suite of features experienced photographers will appreciate. Definitely the best old-fashioned, all-manual film camera for the price if you ask me. The old MF Nikon lenses have incredible clarity still as well. I particularly love the Nikkor 35-70mm f/3.5 & 80-200 f/4.
So helpful, Thank you!
I recently got one of these for my son to learn on and your videos have been invaluable for his learning. Great explanation of everything. Thanks for this video series.
Thank you and I hope your son gets a lot out of photography.
Do you know whether Ricoh made their own lenses or simply re-branded third party lenses?
My understanding is that they made their own.
Auto mode is fixed focus at 1m-infinity.
The best thing about 200 Gold is its price. No matter how good a colour film is, Portra 400 for example, it is of no use when it is so expensive that a photographer could not buy ten rolls of it to learn the film. I think with Gold 200, learning the film is more of a possibility.
Definitely. It's hard to spend the money to learn how a film behaves.
hey ! this was an amazing video but how do we open the details of picture thats already taken? if you could answer that that would be amazing !
Thank you and good question. I already sold this camera so I can't check, but there should be a menu option for playback screen info. If not, try opening your photo and pushing different buttons (other than delete of course) to see if one changes the playback info.
I have bought a Nikon FM SLR, black, and I have installed a new pair of batteries because half a year passed. Thumbs up. Also, as it states in the user manual make sure that the Film Advance Lever is not at the stand off position because the batteries can be drained of energy very quickly.📷
Thank you! I had forgotten that.
I never knew there was an SE model of the K1000. I may need to acquire another K1000 to mate up with my MESuperSE! Great video. Long Live Pentax. I am the original owner of Asahi Pentax K1000 S/N 6608264.
Thank you! That's a nice and old K1000.
Just waisted 5 minutes listening to this dross. He doesn’t believe that the top and bottom are made of magnesium alloy, who cares what you believe?. Then he speaks about how to hold a screw. Idiots like this are trying so hard to tarnish a beautiful film camera 📷 from Pentax in 2024. We don’t need this kind of garbage from so called experts.
